The Northern Division is set to host this year’s Girmit Day national celebration at Subrail Park in Labasa, as announced by the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh. He made this announcement while speaking to the multicultural community in Labasa, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the contributions of Girmitiyas and their descendants.
Under the approval of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the cabinet, a public holiday has been designated to honor these contributions. Minister Singh remarked on the long-standing absence of recognition for the Girmitiyas, expressing hope that this event will change that narrative. “We have a public holiday, and we celebrate the Girmit celebration every year in all the divisions,” noted Singh, recounting past events held in Suva and Lautoka.
The three-day celebration is scheduled to take place from May 10 to May 12, with the Prime Minister expected to inaugurate the festivities. This year, Professor Biman Prasad will present a program on Sunday, while the event will conclude with remarks from the President on Monday.
All Girmitiya descendants in the North, as well as the general public, are encouraged to participate in this significant celebration, which looks to foster unity and cultural appreciation among the diverse communities in Fiji.
Previous articles highlighted a planned budget of $200,000 for the Girmit Commemoration, reflecting the government’s commitment to cultural preservation and celebrating Fiji’s multi-ethnic heritage. Efforts are underway to document Girmit stories and create a dedicated museum, which aligns with the theme “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future,” symbolizing the hope for a more inclusive and united Fiji.
The Girmit Day celebration not only serves as a remembrance of historical struggles but also as a hopeful occasion for fostering unity and recognizing the rich cultural tapestry that defines Fiji. It is a moment for reflection and community engagement, setting a hopeful tone for future celebrations of diversity in the nation.
