The Ministry of Climate Change has voiced strong support for the national budget for 2025-2026, focusing on key environmental issues. Minister Mosese Bulitavu announced that the ministry’s allocation will total $10.8 million, which includes $349,000 earmarked for bolstering the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Unit’s monitoring and enforcement capabilities.

Bulitavu highlighted plans to hire four additional environment officers who will oversee environmental audits, conduct site inspections, and monitor compliance with development projects. He addressed concerns regarding developer compliance with environmental laws, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enforcement and the well-being of communities.

In the previous financial year, the EIA Unit processed over 1,300 applications, clearing a significant backlog. This achievement reflects the ministry’s growing capability to handle increasing investment demands while emphasizing the necessity for more resources.

The Minister stressed that both local and foreign investors must adhere to Fiji’s environmental regulations and responsibilities, underscoring the importance of preserving the nation’s natural environment amidst rising industry activities. He also pointed out the national budget alignment with priorities such as relocating at-risk communities, implementing coastal protection initiatives, and advancing sustainable waste management systems.

These proactive measures indicate a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s environmental governance and community resilience, with the government prioritizing robust environmental policies and enhancing the capacity to meet emerging challenges. This approach demonstrates a commitment to a sustainable future while fostering collaboration among stakeholders in protecting Fiji’s valuable ecosystems.
