The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is actively hosting its off-season athletics training camp, which serves as a vital opportunity for student athletes from smaller schools to refine their skills during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou has emphasized the necessity of such a program, noting that many talented students struggle due to a lack of structured training, which can lead to injuries during competitions.
Tafao’ou articulated his concerns about the physical mishaps he witnessed in young athletes during past events, prompting him to propose this initiative. The camp charges a nominal fee of $20 per week and has received a warm response, with approximately 35 students participating in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Currently, it runs for a six-week period, set to conclude on January 24.
Under the guidance of experienced coaches, including noted former athletes such as Albert Miler and Banuve Tabakaucoro, participants are learning essential skills like block starts, endurance training, and various athletic techniques. This comprehensive training is designed to prepare them for upcoming inter-house competitions starting in February.
Parents have reported positive changes in their children, including improved time management and a newfound discipline, as a result of their commitment to the camp. Furthermore, many young athletes, previously intimidated by established competitors, are now eager to showcase their abilities and take part in the inter-house events after gaining confidence through training.
Tafao’ou stressed that the camp’s mission is to create a supportive environment where every child, regardless of their school’s resources, has an opportunity to excel. By focusing on inclusivity and skill development, the FSC seeks to nurture a new generation of athletes capable of competing at higher levels.
This initiative represents a significant step towards fostering athletic talent in Fiji, reinforcing the message that with the right support and training, all aspiring athletes can shine and develop their potential into future success on both national and international platforms. As the camp continues, it holds promise for enhancing the local athletics landscape and inspiring hope among young athletes throughout the region.
