The Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, has formed a steering committee that includes various governmental and non-governmental organizations to create a National Population Policy. This initiative was underscored by a two-day consultation held in Suva, where key stakeholders discussed essential national issues such as infrastructure in maritime zones, access to markets, rural development, youth empowerment, education, employment opportunities, health services, and environmental concerns.

FBoS Chief Executive Officer Kemueli Naiqama emphasized the importance of establishing a comprehensive policy that reflects the diverse socio-economic and environmental challenges faced by the nation. Upon presenting this policy to Parliament, identified priority areas will receive necessary intervention and budget allocations.

During the forum’s closing, Permanent Secretary of Finance Shiri Gounder highlighted the government’s commitment to an inclusive and consultative approach in policymaking. He stated that collaborating with multiple stakeholders allows for a rich exchange of ideas, making the final policy a true reflection of the people’s needs and dreams as outlined in the new National Development Plan.

Gounder further outlined how population dynamics influence many facets of the nation, from economic growth and employment to social security, health, education, and environmental sustainability. By working together to address these issues within a cohesive policy framework, Fiji is taking significant strides toward a brighter future.

This initiative reflects a hopeful outlook for the people of Fiji, as it not only aims to improve the quality of life but also helps ensure that national development aligns with the aspirations and needs of its citizens. As work continues on drafting and refining the policy, the commitment to collaboration and comprehensive planning will undoubtedly pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous Fiji.
