Fiji is making strides in nurturing the next generation of sports leaders through an innovative Certified Leadership Course in Sport for All, currently being held at the HFC Stadium in Suva. This initiative aims not only to educate participants but also to empower them to take their newfound knowledge back to their local communities to tackle pressing issues through sports.

Jean Francois Laurent, the secretary-general of TAFISA, highlighted that this program is less about winning medals and more about making a tangible impact within communities. The course is designed to unite individuals from various backgrounds—including government officials, national federations, coaches, and community clubs—fostering a collaborative learning environment where participants can share insights and best practices for enhancing sports accessibility.

The four-day course is being supported by the Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) and the Fiji National Sports Commission and marks the first such initiative in Fiji. Participants will have the opportunity to implement community sports projects that promote inclusivity and engagement in physical activities over the coming year.

Laurent praised Cathy Wong, the vice president of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), for her instrumental role in creating partnerships that enhance the program. He emphasized that the course is action-oriented, encouraging participants to develop community projects that will drive meaningful change.

Similar initiatives in Fiji, such as those led by Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, stress the importance of inclusive leadership to foster a dynamic sporting culture. The collaboration between various organizations indicates a broader commitment to sports development, paralleling efforts like the National Sporting Organisations Conference that addresses governance and youth development in sports.

As leaders in the sports community complete their training, they will collectively contribute to strengthening Fiji’s sports infrastructure, fostering a culture of inclusivity, and inspiring youth participation. The overall sentiment surrounding these efforts is one of hope and anticipation for a more engaged and vibrant sports landscape in Fiji, showcasing the transformative power of sports in uniting communities and developing future leaders.
