The Fijian government is implementing new regulations aimed at attracting genuine investments in drug rehabilitation centers. The upcoming Income Tax (Drug Rehabilitation Centre Incentives) Regulations 2025 will stipulate that tax holidays and exemptions will be exclusively granted to individuals or entities that demonstrate a commitment to establishing such centers.
According to the Finance Minister, approvals for these incentives will only be given if the application exhibits the intention and capability to invest in a drug rehabilitation center that contributes positively to Fiji’s economic, health, and social development. Notably, for capital investments ranging from $250,000 to $1 million, a five-year tax exemption will be provided. Capital investments between $1 million and $2 million will qualify for a seven-year tax holiday, while those exceeding $2 million will receive tax exemptions lasting up to 13 consecutive years.
This initiative aligns with previous governmental efforts to tackle the growing issue of drug addiction, particularly among the youth. Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa has called upon businesses to engage with these incentives to combat substance abuse collaboratively. He pointed out that drug addiction significantly impacts young people’s lives and emphasized the necessity of creating effective rehabilitation programs.
The establishment of a comprehensive strategy, including the creation of a new Narcotics Bureau and the launch of the Counter Narcotics Strategy for 2023-2028, demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue through a unified approach. These strategies are instrumental in fostering a future where individuals struggling with addiction can find support and pathways to recovery.
The government’s proactive stance reflects hope for improved societal conditions, focusing on rehabilitation over incarceration and empowering youth through dedicated programs. The collaboration between the government and businesses is seen as vital in addressing this critical concern, potentially leading to healthier communities and better prospects for future generations.
