The Fijian government is actively exploring the creation of a framework aimed at supporting athletes as they transition into life after their sporting careers. Currently, no such structured policy exists within the Ministry of Youth and Sports or the Fiji National Sports Commission. However, ongoing discussions have indicated a strong commitment to this essential issue.
Philip Hereniko, the director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, acknowledged the necessity of a program dubbed ‘Life after Sports,’ which seeks to provide support for athletes who often face uncertainties after retiring from competitive sports. This dialogue was notably prompted by concerns following the tragic passing of rugby star Josaia Raisuqe, who left behind grieving family members. Hereniko articulated the urgency of establishing a protective framework for athletes, affirming that the government is considering solutions to help them transition effectively into post-sport life.
Peter Mazey, the executive chair of the Sports Commission, echoed these sentiments by highlighting ongoing discussions about enhancing support for athletes through various development programs. He mentioned that while a comprehensive framework is not currently in place, certain elements are being integrated into existing programs, including financial literacy training aimed at better equipping athletes for their futures.
The initiatives under discussion parallel similar efforts from the Higher Education Commission, which has initiated the “Life after Rugby” program to provide tailored support and vocational training for retired athletes. This program aims to partner with national sports organizations to facilitate educational pathways, ensuring that players are prepared for life beyond their sports careers.
Broadcasting a message of hope, these developments suggest a positive shift towards recognizing the sacrifices made by athletes and their need for holistic support post-retirement. By aiming to provide educational resources and vocational training, such programs can help uplift the players and foster a more comprehensive understanding of post-athletic life among the sports community in Fiji.
As this framework takes shape, it promises not only to empower individual athletes but also reflect a broader commitment to nurturing the potential of sports in shaping richer, more fulfilling lives for Fijian athletes after their time in the spotlight.
