The Fijian government is prioritizing the installation of 1,700 new boreholes as part of its initiative to enhance water accessibility in rural areas, emphasizing the use of solar-powered drilling technology. During a parliamentary session, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, expressed optimism about this ambitious target, noting that many regions lack proper water infrastructure due to insufficient electrification.
Solar energy will be harnessed to power the borehole pumps, enabling drilling operations in areas where traditional electricity sources are unavailable. Vosarogo highlighted that this innovative approach stems from recent technological advancements obtained from Australia and will significantly aid in identifying potential groundwater sources.
This initiative aligns with previous efforts to improve water management, where the government had announced plans to utilize advanced aerial surveys to assess groundwater resources across Fiji. By leveraging modern technology such as Airborne Electromagnetic surveys, the Ministry of Mineral Resources aims to provide accurate data about aquifers and overall groundwater availability, which is crucial for ensuring sustainable water management.
Opposition member Rinesh Sharma raised concerns about sustainability regarding the approach, to which Vosarogo assured that these new methods will offer better insights for effective water resource management. Additionally, MP Jone Usamate questioned the government about existing groundwater sites and their capacities. In response, Vosarogo noted that advanced technology will assist in gathering this crucial information.
