Fiji is making significant strides in integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) into its education system, with the goal of equipping students with essential digital skills needed for the modern job market. Timoci Bure, the Deputy Secretary for Education, highlighted the importance of enhancing digital literacy alongside the full adoption of technological advancements in schools.

A recent survey involving 1,036 students, including 787 from primary schools and 249 from secondary schools, revealed that an impressive 96% of respondents acknowledge the necessity of ICT skills. These skills encompass fundamental computer operations, effective information retrieval, and the safe use of digital devices.

Despite this optimistic outlook, Fiji still faces challenges such as disparities in technology access, inadequate infrastructure, and the pressing need for improved teacher training and digital resources. The Ministry of Education is actively addressing these issues through its ICT in Education policy.

Sanjaya Mishra, a representative from Commonwealth Learning, underscored the need for open communication among educators, policymakers, and the community to implement best practices effectively. He emphasized, “A policy is merely a document without a demonstrable action plan.”

Currently, a national consultation workshop is taking place to involve key stakeholders in refining strategies for better technology integration in classrooms. This effort is complemented by initiatives like the proposed standalone digital literacy curriculum aimed at bridging gaps identified in prior digital and financial literacy assessments.

Fiji’s commitment to enhancing its educational framework represents a pivotal move towards empowering its youth with vital skills to succeed in a digital economy. By prioritizing educational reforms and fostering community collaboration, Fiji aspires to develop a generation of students who are not only adept in technology but also equipped to make meaningful contributions to local and global economies.

This progressive approach in education fosters a hopeful vision for Fiji’s future, with the potential to create a digitally literate society that can adeptly navigate the challenges of the modern workforce.
