The Fijian Ministry of Housing, through the Housing Authority, has introduced three major initiatives aimed at improving affordable housing options within the country. These programs include the Housing Authority Model Homes, the Village Housing Loan Scheme, and reduced lending interest rates for eligible families.

The Housing Authority Model Homes initiative is set to launch a construction project for 150 homes specifically within the Nepani subdivision. On the other hand, the Village Housing Loan Scheme has been revived after more than a decade, targeting support for families in rural and maritime regions by facilitating the construction of new homes, renovations of existing properties, and the improvement of community halls and evacuation centers.

Additionally, the Government is planning a significant reduction in lending interest rates for families below specific income thresholds in the upcoming financial year of 2025–2026. For families earning under $30,000, a fixed interest rate of two percent will apply for five years, followed by a four percent variable rate. Families with incomes ranging from $30,000 to $50,000 will see a slightly higher fixed rate of 3.5 percent for the first five years before transitioning to a six percent variable rate thereafter.

Minister for Housing Maciu Naulumisa stated that these initiatives reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to alleviating the housing crisis in Fiji. He emphasized that forthcoming budget submissions will focus on addressing issues related to squatter settlements and the persistent need for more affordable housing solutions.

Related to these initiatives, previous announcements indicated that the government is actively working to expand housing programs, including partnerships with the private sector to foster an environment of affordability and accessibility in housing across the nation. The National Housing Policy for 2025-2030 aims to tackle complex housing challenges by providing regulatory frameworks intended to enhance housing supply and address informal settlements effectively.

Overall, the government’s proactive efforts as part of its comprehensive housing strategy convey a sense of hope for many Fijians seeking secure homes. With the focus on community collaboration and innovative financing solutions, there is optimism that these measures will result in significant improvements in living standards for numerous families across the islands.
