The Fijian Government has officially partnered with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to enhance the nation’s infrastructure through the signing of a Loan and Grant Agreement for the Critical Bridges Project. The agreement was signed at the Ministry of Finance in Suva, with key figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Financial Minister Professor Biman Prasad, ADB’s Pacific Regional Director Aaron Battern, and the acting CEO of the Fiji Roads Authority, Apisai Ketenilagi.

The total financing for the project amounts to approximately $US134.5 million (around $F307.7 million), which includes a concessional loan of $US120 million ($F274.5 million) and a grant of $US14.5 million ($F33.2 million). Professor Prasad emphasized that this initiative is part of Fiji’s new National Development Plan (NDP), introduced in September, aimed at focusing on essential infrastructure improvements, particularly rural roads.

The Fiji Roads Authority has pinpointed four bridges that are in urgent need of replacement: the Lami bridge at Suvavou, the Medraukutu bridge near the Lami Cement Factory, the Sabeto bridge spanning the Sabeto River, and the Viseisei bridge connecting Nadi and Lautoka. This project marks a significant milestone as it is the first infrastructure financing the Fijian Government will receive from ADB on concessional terms.

Mr. Ketenilagi pointed out that the project will not only enhance transport connectivity but will also incorporate a comprehensive approach that considers climate change. The focus is on building resilient infrastructure that minimizes long-term disruptions. Construction is slated to begin next year, with a completion target of three years from the start date.

This initiative presents a promising step towards enhancing Fiji’s infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient transportation for its citizens while also addressing climate resilience. The partnership with ADB signifies a commitment to sustainable development, paving the way for more robust infrastructure in the future.

Summary: Fiji’s Government has signed a significant agreement with the Asian Development Bank for a $134.5 million initiative to replace four key bridges, improving transportation and integrating climate-resilient strategies. Start of construction is set for next year, aiming for completion in three years.
