The government is set to enhance land management policies in Fiji, as the Cabinet has approved a review of the Land Use Act 2010. This important update aims to facilitate longer lease tenures for agricultural and commercial developments, promoting investment and productivity within these sectors.

As outlined in the revised objectives, the Land Use Act 2010 seeks to optimize the use of designated iTaukei land for the benefit of land-owning units, contingent upon securing 60% written consent from relevant iTaukei landowners aged 18 and above. Additionally, the review will enable the better utilization of state land to maximize returns to the government while encouraging long-term leases for progressive agricultural and commercial projects.

This review comes in response to ongoing discussions about idle state land and the need for more effective land use policies that can prevent speculation and stimulate economic growth. Previous reports highlighted significant portions of prime land that remain undeveloped despite being leased, raising concerns among lawmakers about the mismanagement of these resources. The Ministry of Lands has been working on measures, including monitoring idle land and issuing breach notices to leaseholders failing to develop their properties.

Moreover, discussions led by the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) revealed that many agricultural land leases remain unutilized. Out of 16,000 agricultural leases, one-third are not being farmed, prompting calls for better management and potential revocation of unproductive leases. The government has initiated extended consultation periods to help farmers better prepare for lease renewals, further underlining its commitment to improve agricultural productivity.

The introduction of master land use plans to streamline lease arrangements is another promising development. This systematic approach categorizes land for specific purposes before leasing, which can help in making more efficient land use decisions, especially in the tourism sector.

Overall, the government’s efforts reflect a hopeful emphasis on collaboration between stakeholders, highlighting a shared commitment to sustainability and effective land management in Fiji. These reviews and initiatives not only aim to address immediate concerns but also pave the way for a brighter future, enhancing economic opportunities and wellbeing for local communities.
