Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, recently engaged in a meeting with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This discussion took place during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific held in Bangkok.

In this meeting, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude towards UNFPA for their assistance in formulating Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This essential policy is designed to respond to demographic shifts and ensure that population dynamics are in harmony with the country’s national development objectives. It is anticipated that this policy will significantly influence Fiji’s future development and growth trajectory.

Additionally, UNFPA expressed eagerness for Fiji’s involvement in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) scheduled for April 2025.

This engagement marks a crucial step for Fiji in addressing population-related challenges and aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable development. By collaborating with UNFPA, Fiji hopes to tackle demographic changes proactively, ensuring that its growth strategies are inclusive and forward-thinking.

Overall, this partnership between Fiji and UNFPA not only reflects a commitment to addressing population dynamics but also presents an opportunity for sustainable development, which can have a positive ripple effect on the nation’s economy and societal well-being.
