Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, recently held a meeting with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific, taking place in Bangkok.
In this encounter, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude to UNFPA for its crucial support in formulating Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This policy is designed to address the evolving demographic landscape and ensure that population trends are cohesive with the nation’s development objectives. It is anticipated that the policy will serve as a vital framework for steering Fiji’s future growth.
Furthermore, UNFPA is eager to see Fiji’s involvement in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD), slated for April 2025.
This collaborative effort highlights the commitment of both Fiji and UNFPA to fostering sustainable development in the region, a promising step toward addressing the challenges posed by demographic changes and ensuring that policies are in alignment with national goals. As Fiji prepares for its pivotal role in discussions at the upcoming CPD session, it positions itself as an advocate for population dynamics that can greatly benefit its future trajectory.
