The Engadine Dragons have partnered with the Muaira Rugby League to introduce the MiniMod Lalai Program, an initiative aimed at strengthening grassroots rugby league in Fiji. The program kicked off in Lautoka this weekend, bringing together Under 10 teams from across Fiji to participate in a development camp.

Dean Sharman, co-founder of the Engadine Dragons Pacific Development Clinic, expressed enthusiasm about the program’s reach, noting that it has attracted many young athletes, particularly from Lautoka, to engage in this three-stage initiative designed for junior rugby league development.

The MiniMod Lalai Program focuses on instilling fundamental rugby league skills among children, including essential techniques such as passing, playing the ball correctly, and positioning on the field. The initiative aims to prepare these young players for an exciting journey in rugby, emphasizing growth both on and off the field.

Looking ahead, a National Gala Day is scheduled for June, which promises to be a significant event featuring 14 teams from Fiji. By September, there are plans to host an International Gala Day, featuring participation from the Engadine Dragons from Australia and the Marist Saints from Auckland, further expanding the program’s reach and impact.

These collaborative efforts are reflective of the growing support for rugby development initiatives in the Pacific region. Such programs not only enhance the sporting skills of young athletes but also foster community ties and a healthy lifestyle among participants.

The optimism surrounding these initiatives is palpable, as they represent a commitment to nurturing the next generation of rugby players in Fiji, encouraging youth engagement in sports and laying a foundation for future success in the rugby league arena.
