Fiji is set to receive a new patrol boat from Australia, as reported by the Australian Defence Magazine. This vessel is intended to replace the decommissioned patrol boat, Puamau, which unfortunately ran aground on a reef.
The new boat, named Timo, is currently docked at Austal’s facility in Henderson, near Perth, where it has been registered under the Fijian flag. The name Timo is a tribute to Able Seaman Timo Puamau, who lost his life during World War II. This recognition comes as a poignant symbol of continuity, as the name Timo was previously associated with the short-lived RFNS Puamau.
On October 23, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua shared positive news regarding this development, stating that a replacement plan is being finalized, which will be announced at a later date. He is scheduled to visit Perth on November 22 to inspect the newly constructed vessel, marking an important step for Fiji’s maritime capabilities.
This initiative signifies not only a commitment to bolstering Fiji’s defense infrastructure but also honors the legacy of its servicemen. The introduction of the RFNS Timo is an optimistic step forward, reflecting strong ties between Fiji and Australia and enhancing security operations in the region.
Overall, this development is a hopeful sign of progress for Fiji and its efforts to strengthen its maritime resources while paying homage to its national heroes.
