Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently spoke at the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants Congress 2025, addressing the critical challenges posed by global trends, including geopolitics, inflation, energy costs, and the ongoing digital transformation. He posed an essential question to attendees: “When will we intentionally prepare for the future or allow it to shape us?”
During his address, Mr. Rabuka highlighted that while these challenges present difficulties, they also open doors for significant opportunities, such as diversifying Fiji’s economy, upskilling the youth, and attracting sustainable investments. He emphasized that the government is dedicated to fostering these opportunities but acknowledged that collaboration with partners who understand scale and sustainability is essential.
Recognizing the urgency of adopting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, Mr. Rabuka noted that these elements are now crucial rather than optional. He pointed out that climate change is already affecting the lives and livelihoods of those in Fiji’s maritime communities. As a nation situated at the forefront of the climate crisis, Rabuka stressed the need for financial professionals who can navigate climate risk and support green financing initiatives.
Additionally, he called for the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) to take a leading role in ESG reporting and sustainability efforts. He mentioned that embracing the digital frontier, including advancements in artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, will redefine the accounting profession and revolutionize economic operations in Fiji.
This outlook aligns with previous discussions at the FICA congress that emphasized resilience and informed decision-making in response to emerging economic conditions. By fostering a culture of partnership and transparency in every aspect of financial practice, Fiji can build a robust and sustainable future.
