The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) held an inspiring Talanoa session for Batch 01/2024 recruits at the FCS Training Academy in Naboro, as they approach graduation in just two weeks. Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa addressed the recruits, commending their dedication throughout the rigorous 14-week Basic Recruit Training program and encouraging them to remain steadfast in their upcoming roles as Corrections Officers.

Drawing from his own experiences, Dr. Nakarawa shared vital lessons on maintaining professionalism, emphasizing, “Familiarity breeds contempt.” This reinforces the importance of keeping professional boundaries with inmates to ensure safety and uphold the integrity of their duties. He acknowledged the transition the recruits would need to make as they move from theoretical learning to real-world application, encouraging them to stay true to their foundation during challenging interactions.

The Commissioner also highlighted the key theme of integrity, reminding recruits that they have much to lose if they fail to uphold their dedication to the service. He encouraged them to seek further education and emphasized the value of communication skills in their career. An interactive segment allowed the recruits to voice their concerns and ask questions directly, enhancing the open dialogue.

In addition, Dr. Nakarawa recognized four participants from His Majesty’s Prison in Tonga, who are set to be the first to graduate with an accredited Certificate Level 5 in Corrections Management from Fiji National University (FNU). This collaboration with FNU, as noted in previous articles, particularly aids in establishing educational pathways for correctional officers, further enhancing their skills and the overall effectiveness of the corrections system in Fiji.

As the recruits prepare for their final weeks of training, Dr. Nakarawa reminded them to prioritize the FCS’s interests and maintain professionalism, including refraining from expressing frustrations on social media. He concluded the session by wishing them success as they complete their training and transition into their vital roles within the corrections environment.

The ongoing efforts of the Fiji Corrections Service demonstrate a commitment not only to training officers but to the overall improvement of rehabilitation practices within the system, fostering a hopeful future for corrections in Fiji.
