The Fiji under-16 boys’ football team is making final preparations as they set to leave for the OFC U16 Championship in the Solomon Islands on Thursday. Head coach Sunil Kumar commented on the team’s cohesion, noting that the squad, which consists of 20 local players and three overseas-based players, has been training effectively together.

“This team is gelling well,” Kumar mentioned in a recent interview. He highlighted the focus on refining tactical elements of their game, particularly set pieces, especially after a successful team bonding session at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes earlier this week.

The Future Bula Boys have their sights set on qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup for the second consecutive time. “Our aim is to qualify for back-to-back U-17 World Cups,” Kumar emphasized, indicating a strong commitment to success on the international stage.

The tournament, which runs from August 17 to 30, is also an official qualifier for the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup. Fiji is drawn in Group A alongside Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, and Tahiti, facing significant competition.

Kumar also expressed confidence in the overseas players from New Zealand and Australia, stating they have integrated well into the team. The overseas-based players include Koopah Singh from Ricki Herbert Academy, Ryan Achari from Hamilton Wanderers, and Arnav Chand from Blacktown Spartans.

As Fiji approaches their first match against Tahiti on August 17, Kumar noted the commitment and discipline displayed by the players during training. “The boys understand what is at stake and are working hard to make their country proud,” he said, echoing an inspiring mindset that could drive them to perform well in the tournament.

Overall, the culmination of their hard work and team spirit brings a hopeful anticipation for their impending matches, suggesting that with dedication, Fiji’s young talents can achieve their goal of making a mark on the regional and international football scenes.
