The Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, has initiated the formation of a steering committee that includes a diverse group of governmental and non-governmental organizations aimed at developing a comprehensive National Population Policy.
This initiative led to a two-day consultation held in Suva, where key stakeholders discussed important national issues such as infrastructure development in maritime areas, access to markets, rural advancement, youth empowerment, educational opportunities, job availability, improved health facilities, and environmental challenges.
FBoS CEO Kemueli Naiqama emphasized the importance of this consultation for both the Government and the citizens of Fiji. He explained that the upcoming National Population Policy will be presented to Parliament, aiming to enhance the quality of life and community well-being. Naiqama further indicated that once the policy is approved, the Government will identify priority areas in need of intervention, alongside necessary budget provisions.
Shiri Gounder, the Permanent Secretary of Finance, highlighted the Government’s commitment to an inclusive approach in policy-making, stating that collaboration among various stakeholders brings valuable perspectives. He noted that population dynamics influence all facets of national development—from economic growth and employment to social services and environmental sustainability. Gounder expressed hope that addressing these matters through a unified policy framework will pave the way for a brighter future for Fiji.
In conclusion, this collaborative effort not only seeks to create a viable National Population Policy but also reflects a hopeful vision for addressing complex socio-economic challenges faced by the nation. The next stages will include drafting, refining, and finalizing the policy to ensure it meets the aspirations of the Fijian people.
This development is a positive step towards fostering a sustainable and inclusive future for all citizens in Fiji.
