Fiji’s Future at a Crossroads: Can the Drug Crisis Be Averted?

The future of Fiji is in jeopardy if swift action is not taken to tackle the escalating drug problem, warns Bua paramount chief Ratu Makutu Nagagavoka. He noted that, while the country has been focused on controlling marijuana, the emergence of new drugs is complicating the situation.

Ratu Makutu pointed out that although marijuana has been the main concern, methamphetamine—commonly referred to as “meth” or “ice”—is now adding to the challenges. He believes the roots of this issue are found within the community and emphasizes that solutions must begin at home.

He advocates for a proactive approach to drug prevention and intervention, stating that enhancing family and community structures is crucial to effectively combatting this problem. According to him, addressing the drug issue requires a focus on prevention, education, and support at the family and community levels.

Ratu Makutu highlighted that if immediate action is not taken, the state of Fiji will deteriorate.
