Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, engaged with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific, which took place in Bangkok.

In their discussion, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude to UNFPA for its assistance in crafting Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This policy is designed to address demographic shifts and ensure that population dynamics align with national development objectives. The implementation of this policy is anticipated to significantly influence Fiji’s future development trajectory.

Furthermore, UNFPA is eager to see Fiji actively participate in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) scheduled for April 2025.

This meeting underscores the importance of international collaboration in tackling population-related challenges and highlights Fiji’s proactive approach towards sustainable development. By integrating population policies into its growth strategy, Fiji aims for a balanced and inclusive future. It is encouraging to see such initiatives that prioritize the well-being of citizens while aligning with broader development goals.
