A proposed Career Centre aims to address the labor shortages in Fiji, spearheaded by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the producer of FIJI Water. Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for the South Pacific, outlined this initiative during the Top Executives Conference 2024 (TO PEX2024) held at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau. She emphasized that the project represents a significant investment in the Fijian workforce.
Moody indicated this Career Centre will replicate successful models implemented in California, where the company has effectively supported workforce development. The center, scheduled to open in Suva by 2025, will focus on enhancing skills for local employment, particularly within the marine operations sector, which faces a considerable shortage of qualified personnel.
The investment reflects FIJI Water’s commitment to the region, having already allocated over FJ$140 million to expand its production capacity by nearly 47%. Moody noted the increasing need for skilled workers as the company aims to fully utilize this capacity over the next decade.
In collaboration with Fiji National University, the Career Centre seeks to bridge the gap between job training and employment readiness. Moody stated that the center will provide tailored training programs to meet the specific needs of employers, encouraging participation from other sectors within manufacturing and marine industries through the formation of an industry council.
This initiative not only promises to nurture a skilled workforce but also fosters collaboration between businesses and educational institutions to ensure that training aligns closely with market demands. Such partnerships can pave the way for sustainable employment opportunities in Fiji.
Overall, the establishment of the Career Centre signifies a proactive approach to economic development and job creation, ultimately contributing to the region’s long-term prosperity.
