A new career centre has been proposed as a response to the ongoing labour shortages in Fiji. This initiative, led by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited—the company behind FIJI Water—aims to replicate a successful model established in California, according to Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for the South Pacific division.

During her speech at the Top Executives Conference 2024 at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, Ms. Moody described the career centre as a significant investment aimed at enhancing Fiji’s workforce through skills development. She highlighted the essential role this centre will play in addressing the serious shortage of skilled Pacific Island seafarers required to operate their fleet of approximately 11 vessels.

FIJI Water has committed over FJ$140 million to expand its operational capacity by 47% over the upcoming decade, indicating the pressing need for a growing workforce to manage this expansion. The company plans to collaborate with Fiji National University to establish the centre in Suva, with hopes of launching it by 2025.

Ms. Moody emphasized the project’s objective to bridge the gap in vocational training that aligns with business needs. By partnering with industry professionals, the programme will focus on preparing participants to be job-ready, creating a robust skills pipeline for both the company and its partners. In her remarks, she also encouraged collaboration with other manufacturing and maritime businesses to form an industry council within the career centre.

This initiative not only represents a strategic move to tackle skill shortages but also reflects a broader commitment to workforce development and economic growth in Fiji.

Positive Spin: The proposed career centre heralds a promising future for job seekers in Fiji, presenting an opportunity for locals to gain valuable skills and enhance their employability in a growing industry. By investing in education and training, this initiative brings hope for a brighter economic outlook for both individuals and the country as a whole.
