Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad recently engaged in discussions with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific, which took place in Bangkok.

In their meeting, DPM Prasad expressed his gratitude to UNFPA for its invaluable support in creating Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This policy is designed to tackle demographic changes and ensure that population trends align with the nation’s development objectives. The successful implementation of this policy is anticipated to significantly influence Fiji’s future growth trajectory.

Additionally, UNFPA is optimistic about Fiji’s involvement in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD), scheduled for April 2025.

This dialogue highlights the commitment of both Fiji and the UNFPA to foster sustainable development and tackle population-related challenges. The partnership is promising, as it can lead to more effective policies that address the pressing issues facing the population, ultimately paving the way for a healthier and more prosperous future for Fiji.

In summary, the collaboration between Fiji and UNFPA marks a proactive step towards aligning population policies with national development aims, showcasing a model for other nations facing similar challenges. Such partnerships can deepen regional cooperation and strengthen socio-economic resilience in the Asia-Pacific region.
