The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection is taking significant steps to enhance the well-being of older Fijians through a series of engaging recreational events. This week, Nasinu hosted an Elderly Recreational Day designed to promote dignity, inclusion, and access to essential services for senior citizens.

Minister Sashi Kiran led the initiative that combined enjoyable social activities with practical support, including health screenings and information on welfare programs. The event featured live performances from the National Youth Band, along with medical checks provided by nurses from Valelevu Health Centre and educational talks by Social Welfare officers.

These gatherings not only offer a fun day out but also serve an important purpose—connecting the elderly with crucial services they might be missing otherwise. The Ministry noted that similar events had previously taken place in Suva and Labasa, with plans to broaden outreach to other regions in the near future. The overarching goal is to ensure that every senior citizen in Fiji receives the care, visibility, and support they deserve.

This initiative comes in the context of a broader commitment to combat challenges such as loneliness and neglect among the elderly, which have been pressing concerns in recent discussions. Community engagement events like Elderly Recreational Day echo earlier efforts, emphasizing connection and support for older citizens while promoting their active participation in society.

The government’s focus on uplifting the elderly reflects a hopeful vision for the future, where seniors are valued, respected, and integrated within their communities. With continued attention to the needs of this demographic, there is potential for an even stronger, more connected society in Fiji.

By fostering these supportive environments, the Ministry is not only addressing immediate needs but also laying the groundwork for long-term improvements in the quality of life for older individuals across the nation.
