The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced new regulated prices for various fuel products, including Unleaded Petrol (Motor Spirit), Premix, Kerosene, Diesel, and LPG, set to take effect on January 1, 2025. These price adjustments are based on the cost of imports by fuel and LPG companies recorded in November 2024, with a one-month adjustment period applied for the review.
According to the FCCC’s analysis, the prices for Motor Spirit and Premix will remain stable, thanks to favorable shifts in international fuel prices and freight rates, despite the strengthening of the US dollar. On the other hand, Kerosene and Diesel prices will see an increase due to rising international fuel costs coupled with the stronger dollar. Additionally, LPG prices will also rise in response to higher Butane Contract Prices and increased demand from international markets.
The FCCC is committed to ensuring that these new prices are adhered to at both wholesale and retail levels. Their Enforcement Team will actively monitor compliance, and consumers are encouraged to report any discrepancies in prices. FCCC teams will be available in various regions to facilitate enforcement.
With the new price adjustments slated for January 1, 2025, consumers are advised to stay informed by checking for updates at local fuel outlets. This proactive approach by the FCCC could lead to increased consumer awareness and potentially greater fairness in pricing within the market.
In summary, while some fuel prices will rise, the stability of Motor Spirit and Premix offers consumers a silver lining amid fluctuating international markets. The oversight from the FCCC may also enhance accountability among fuel providers, assuring consumers that their interests are being protected.
It is hopeful that as these regulatory measures take effect, they will foster a transparent and fair marketplace for all consumers in Fiji.
