Starting Sunday, March 31, 2025, Fijian motorists and households will benefit from reduced prices on fuel and LPG products. The price of motor spirit is set to decrease by 10 cents, bringing the retail price to $2.58 per liter. Similarly, premix fuel will also drop by 10 cents to $2.41 per liter. Kerosene will see a more substantial decrease of 12 cents, now priced at $1.66, while diesel will decline by the same margin to $2.19 per liter.

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) attributes these reductions to falling global crude oil prices, which have dropped for two consecutive months due to weak market sentiment influenced by US-China trade tensions and active selling by hedge funds. Despite these challenges, there is renewed buying interest in the physical market, particularly as the summer driving season approaches, with expectations for global refinery intake to recover following maintenance lows.

In addition, LPG prices are scheduled to decrease from June 1, 2025, with a 4.5 kg gas cylinder dropping by 17 cents to $15.14 and a 12 kg cylinder decreasing by 46 cents to sell for $40.38. Bulk gas will experience a slight reduction of three cents, costing $3.12 per kg, while autogas will be priced at $2.19, reflecting a two-cent drop.

Looking ahead, the FCCC underscores that Fiji’s LPG prices are influenced by the “Saudi CP” set by Saudi Aramco and are subject to global market dynamics due to the country’s relatively small domestic demand. Despite the potential for fluctuating prices, the recent reductions are a positive sign for consumers, offering some relief in challenging economic times, and could encourage more efficient budget management among households.

This adjustment in fuel pricing not only helps ease financial burdens but may also stimulate ongoing discussions around energy efficiency and investments in alternative energy sources as Fiji navigates the complexities of the global fuel market.
