The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has acknowledged the persistent flooding concerns on Malakua Road in Qeleloa, Nadi, and has announced a comprehensive master plan aimed at implementing permanent infrastructure enhancements.

In an effort to alleviate current flooding challenges, the FRA is undertaking routine maintenance to mitigate impacts during heavy rainfall, which includes grading, compaction, and re-sheeting of affected areas. This proactive approach aims to manage immediate issues while the authority also plans for long-term solutions.

The FRA detailed an extensive strategy that includes crucial upgrades to the local drainage system and the replacement of the Nakia Bridge. The planned upgrades will involve elevating the road level above adjacent sugarcane fields and realigning the drainage to improve surface water management from both the road and surrounding areas. This significant infrastructure project is slated for the 2036-2027 financial year.

Additionally, recognizing that Malakua Road serves as an essential pathway for school children, the FRA is committed to enhancing safety measures. They will install cross culverts next to the existing structure to facilitate quicker water drainage during heavy rain events.

The authority has also addressed community concerns regarding the quality of work conducted by subcontractors. The FRA reassured residents that it closely monitors all projects and performs quality checks both during and after completion. They have emphasized that if any quality issues are identified, contractors are obligated to correct them at their own expense.

Overall, the FRA’s commitment to upgrading the infrastructure in Nadi reflects a dedicated approach towards improving safety and accessibility for the community, particularly for the younger residents who rely on these routes for their daily commute.
