Fiji’s Foreign Policy Takes a Maritime Turn with Spain

Fiji’s newly introduced Foreign Policy White Paper aims to enhance development assistance through more robust multilateral and bilateral relationships with Pacific and global partners. This objective was highlighted by Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, during a farewell meeting with Gaël Sánchez Cano, the Chargé d’affaires at the Embassy of Spain in Fiji, who is wrapping up his diplomatic service.

Qereqeretabua reiterated Fiji’s commitments outlined in the Foreign Policy White Paper and the “Ocean of Peace” initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sitiveni Rabuka. She emphasized the country’s dedication to collaborating closely with development partners in the Pacific to foster economic growth, peace, security, and sustainable development.

In this context, Qereqeretabua expressed her support for discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation on issues of mutual interest between Fiji and Spain. She also acknowledged Cano’s dedicated service to Fiji and wished him success in his future endeavors.

Cano praised Prime Minister Rabuka for the Ocean of Peace initiative, reaffirming Spain’s support for this important project. He further recognized the significance of Fiji’s Foreign Policy White Paper, stressing the need for clear and effective guidance to advance shared goals and priorities.
