The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has publicly reaffirmed its dedication to support the Fiji Police Force in the fight against drug trafficking, following a high-level meeting last Friday at the RFMF Headquarters in Suva. This critical meeting was attended by RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai and Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, who engaged in discussions about tackling the serious challenges posed by drug-related crimes throughout Fiji.

A pivotal decision from the meeting was the formation of a collaborative joint operations task force. This task force aims to identify, disrupt, and dismantle drug trafficking activities in the country’s high-risk areas. Major-General Kalouniwai expressed the military’s unwavering commitment to bolstering the police’s efforts in ensuring national security and public safety, emphasizing the importance of their joint initiatives to address the escalating drug crisis in the region.

Commissioner Tudravu highlighted the necessity of inter-agency collaboration to effectively combat the illicit drug trade, which has increasingly threatened local communities. The establishment of this task force reflects a strategic move towards launching targeted operations while also engaging with communities to tackle the underlying causes of drug abuse.

Previous initiatives have pointed out that Fiji’s drug challenges are often linked with broader social issues such as poverty, inadequate healthcare, and educational disparities. Hence, the task force will prioritize community engagement strategies to foster cooperation with local residents and establish support systems designed to mitigate drug misuse.

As the operations commence, both the military and police are hopeful about the prospects of their collaborative efforts leading to enhanced safety for communities. This unified approach against drug-related threats underscores a commitment to building a healthier and more secure society for all Fijians.

Authorities are optimistic that this initiative will not only address immediate concerns but will also pave the way for long-term strategies focused on prevention and rehabilitation, ultimately contributing to a supportive community environment free from the challenges of drug abuse.
