The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force have embarked on a strengthened partnership aimed at tackling the rising issue of illicit drug trafficking in the country. This initiative emerged from a pivotal high-level meeting held at the RFMF Headquarters, attended by RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai and Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu.

One of the primary outcomes of this meeting was the establishment of a joint operations task force specifically designed to identify, disrupt, and dismantle drug trafficking networks, particularly in high-risk areas predominantly affected by drug-related crimes. Major General Kalouniwai reiterated the military’s strong commitment to national security and their readiness to support police initiatives in maintaining public safety.

Commissioner Tudravu expressed his support for this enhanced partnership, recognizing the critical importance of inter-agency collaboration in effectively combatting the illicit drug trade, which poses significant risks to local communities. Both leaders aim to implement coordinated operations that will address not only the immediate threats posed by drug-related activities but also engage with the community to address the root causes of addiction and trafficking.

The discussions also highlighted social issues such as poverty, limited access to healthcare, and educational inequalities as contributing factors to Fiji’s drug crisis. These underlying challenges were acknowledged as essential elements to be addressed during the task force’s initiatives. The new task force is expected to incorporate community engagement strategies, allowing local residents to participate actively in developing solutions to combat the drug epidemic.

As the task force gears up for its operations, both military and police officials project a positive outlook regarding the potential outcomes. This collaborative approach represents a united effort against drug-related issues in Fiji, underscoring a proactive strategy to enhance safety and health within the communities. By focusing on community involvement and strengthening law enforcement, authorities aim to create long-term strategies that not only respond to the current challenges but also prioritize prevention and rehabilitation efforts.
