Rewa football midfielder Tevita Waranaivalu has honored his family and teammates for their support during challenging times as he received his award. Waranaivalu made history by becoming the first Fijian footballer to earn the inaugural Digicel Fiji Premier League Golden Ball Award at the Fiji Football Association’s awards night held at the Sugar Cane Growers Building in Lautoka on Friday night.
Hailing from Naisomua, Tailevu, Waranaivalu reflected on the challenges he faced over the past two seasons, including struggles with injuries and weight management. “I have been through a lot,” he stated, noting that he faced various ups and downs, particularly after getting injured at the start of the season. However, he persevered, eventually motivating himself to complete the season.
Despite being benched for multiple games and playing only two to three minutes, his determination remained steadfast. “I never lost hope. I kept working, especially on my diet because I got overweight. Every time I went on the national team, I was overweight, but I still believed in myself that I could do it,” he explained.
Waranaivalu emphasized the importance of his family’s support in his journey, saying, “They’ve always been by my side, supporting me, and that award is also a credit to the whole team. Without them, I couldn’t have got it.” He spoke of the team’s camaraderie, overcoming financial difficulties together, and credited that unity for his achievement, dedicating the award to his two sons, Richard and King David.
Earlier this month, Waranaivalu also earned the title of player of the tournament at the Police Inter Formation Championship 2024 in Nausori.
