The Fiji national team, coached by Ashif Khan, has made a strong start in the Tebara Nations Muslim World Cup Championship 2024 held at Lautoka’s Churchill Park. Currently, Fiji occupies the second position in the premier division points table after playing two matches. The defending champions first secured a 2-0 victory over Australia and followed that up with a goalless draw against the USA. With four points, Fiji trails behind New Zealand, who leads the table with six points from two wins.
Coach Khan acknowledged the competitive nature of the tournament, praising the skillful football exhibited by various teams. He emphasized the importance of experience within the Fiji squad, given their limited training time together. “Defensive strategy is our priority, and we’ll focus on offensive plays later,” Khan stated. He celebrated the teamwork displayed by his players and expressed confidence in their capability to continue performing well, especially in anticipation of facing a tactically strong Australian side.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Under-17 team faced New Zealand in their inaugural match, resulting in a 0-0 draw. On the first day of the tournament, Canada’s Masters Teams demonstrated impressive performances.
