The Fiji national football team, led by coach Ashif Khan, is currently in second place in the Premier Division standings of the Tebara Nations Muslim World Cup Championship 2024, being held at Lautoka’s Churchill Park. The team, which is the defending champion, began the tournament with a solid performance, defeating Australia 2-0 in their opening match and then securing a goalless draw against the USA. With a total of four points, Fiji trails behind New Zealand, which holds the top position with six points from two victories.

Coach Khan acknowledged the high level of competition, stating that many teams demonstrated exceptional football capabilities. He emphasized that despite limited training as a unified team, the players’ collective experience would be advantageous. “The priority is defence and attack will come in the end,” Khan remarked, highlighting the importance of sticking to their game plan, which was effectively executed by the team. He praised key players, including Zibraaz Sahib, Abbu Zahid, and William Valentine, for their leadership.

Khan expressed hope for continued strong performances, while also acknowledging the tactical strength of Australia. In addition to the senior team’s performance, Fiji’s Under-17 squad began their campaign with a 0-0 draw against New Zealand.

On the first day of the Masters competition, Canada’s teams also made a notable impression. The Masters 40 squad, under coach Mohammed Imtiaz, claimed a decisive 3-0 victory over the USA, while the defending champions, Canada Legends 50, showcased their prowess by defeating Fiji with striker Lewis Oladuntoye scoring four goals.

FANCA president Mohammed Yusuf commented positively on the tournament’s kickoff, indicating that it has set a promising tone for future matches.

Overall, the tournament brings together vibrant competition and showcases the spirit of sportsmanship among the participating nations, especially as teams strive to achieve their best in a friendly yet competitive environment.
