The Fiji national team, under the guidance of coach Ashif Khan, currently occupies the second position in the premier division of the Tebara Nations Muslim World Cup Championship 2024, which is being held at Lautoka’s Churchill Park. As the defending champions, Fiji kicked off their campaign with a solid 2-0 victory over Australia and followed it up with a goalless draw against the USA. This puts Fiji at four points, trailing behind New Zealand, who leads with six points from two wins.
Khan acknowledged the intensity of the competition, noting that teams have shown exceptional football skills. He emphasized the value of experience within the Fiji squad, which has not had extensive training sessions together. “Experience is crucial,” Khan remarked, highlighting that the team’s strategy focuses primarily on solid defense, allowing the offense to develop over time.
The players executed the game plan effectively, displaying teamwork that Khan commended, especially recognizing the capabilities of key players like Zibraaz Sahib, Abbu Zahid, and William Valentine. Looking ahead, he expressed hope for continued strong performances but acknowledged that Australia would pose a significant challenge and be tactically stronger.
In addition to the men’s tournament, the Fiji Under-17 team also made their mark, ending their first match against New Zealand in a 0-0 draw. Meanwhile, Canada’s Masters Teams started strong, with their Masters 40 squad defeating the USA 3-0 and the Canada Legends 50, bolstered by striker Lewis Oladuntoye’s impressive four-goal performance against Fiji.
FANCA president Mohammed Yusuf noted the successful start of the tournament, pointing to an exciting and competitive event ahead.
This balanced mix of competition highlights the growth and potential of football across different age groups and teams, showcasing talent while fostering a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. It’s evident that Fiji is determined to build on their success and will continue to challenge for excellence in the tournament moving forward.
