Four clubs from Fiji are among the 24 teams expressing interest in joining the upcoming OFC Professional League, set to commence in January 2026. The league is seen as a transformative step for football in the Pacific region, with clubs from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Caledonia, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, and Vanuatu also applying.
The deadline for submissions was this past Friday, with clubs showcasing a strong desire to be part of this elite eight-team competition that will run from early January to May 2026. The application process, however, continues until the end of June.
Stuart Larman, the OFC Professional League Manager, praised the impressive response, noting it reflects a shared vision among clubs to elevate professional football in Oceania. He stated, “A lot of work has gone into structuring a professional league that will accelerate the growth of football across the region, including detailed preparation of the Club Application Process.”
The OFC Professional League is poised to redefine football in the region by establishing a competitive framework and increasing economic and cultural ties among participating nations. It promises to set new benchmarks for performance and opportunity, paving the way for local talent as Oceania heads toward greater visibility in the football world.
This initiative is timely, especially considering Oceania’s newly secured spot in the 2026 World Cup, which could spur local players’ development and enhance their prospects on a global stage. The anticipation surrounding the league signifies a hopeful era for football in Fiji and throughout Oceania, offering a compelling platform for aspiring athletes and a vibrant community engagement through the sport.
