Fiji’s Football Future: Can Roy Krishna Lead the Bula Boys to Victory?

National striker and leading goal scorer in Oceania football, Roy Krishna, is set to feature prominently in Fiji’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Oceania Qualifiers next month. Known as the Wonder Boy, Krishna is also Fiji’s most-capped footballer, having represented the country for 16 years.

Fiji Football chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf confirmed the team’s progress, highlighting their recent Tri-Nations series against the Solomon Islands and Hong Kong China. In those matches, Fiji secured a victory against the Solomon Islands and achieved a 1-all draw with Hong Kong.

The Bula Boys are scheduled to depart for Papua New Guinea on November 9 for two key matches. Krishna is expected to join the team on October 6, play on October 10, and return to India briefly before rejoining the squad in PNG. Despite turning 37 in August, he remains active in the Indian Super League with his club Odisha.

Yusuf noted the blend of experienced players, including Samuela Kautoga, Setareki Hughes, Akuila Mateisuva, and Krishna, with younger talents. Coach Rob Sherman and the team management are working on a game plan to take on the Solomon Islands.

Yusuf expressed confidence in the team, stating that every team has an equal chance and that they have been preparing well. They are hopeful for a strong start with a win against the Solomon Islands. Upcoming fixtures include Fiji versus Solomon Islands on October 10 at HFC Bank Stadium in Fiji, followed by matches against Papua New Guinea on November 14 and New Caledonia on November 17, both at PNG Football Stadium.
