In a significant enforcement action, seven businesses in Fiji have faced substantial fines totaling $14,900 after being found in violation of food safety regulations during inspections conducted by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services’ Food Unit. The targeted establishments included a coffee shop, takeaway outlets, retail stores, and street food vendors, each penalized for various non-compliance issues.

Among these actions, a major retail shop in Rakiraki Town received a closure order due to recurring compliance problems. Taina Rauvala, head of the Food Unit, highlighted alarming deficiencies uncovered during inspections, such as meat exhibiting freezer burn and foul odors, freezers malfunctioning outside required temperature ranges, and the presence of pests like cockroaches and weevils in storage areas. These findings underscore the critical need for businesses to maintain hygiene and safety standards, not only to protect consumer health but also to foster a fair marketplace for all business owners.
