The Ministry of Health and Medical Services in Fiji has taken decisive action by imposing fines totaling around $14,900 on seven businesses for failing to meet local health regulations. This initiative underscores the essential requirement for businesses to adhere to public health standards, ensuring consumer safety from potentially hazardous practices.
Seema Shandil, the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji, expressed her dissatisfaction with businesses that have compromised nutrition by selling inferior products and creating hazardous environments. She reaffirmed the Consumer Council’s commitment to backing the Ministry’s efforts to clamp down on these non-compliant entities that have repeatedly ignored prior warnings.
This enforcement is a direct response to a slew of complaints about persistent violations in food safety. Shandil pointed out that, despite the Council’s previous outreach to educate businesses on improving their practices, many have continued to operate without necessary precautions.
Specific findings from recent inspections revealed significant issues, including a retail store in Rakiraki Town that was ordered to close due to ongoing non-compliance. Violations noted included the sale of meat with freezer burn, undesirable odors, malfunctioning refrigeration units, and pest infestations involving cockroaches and weevils.
These recent actions mirror previous interventions, such as the closure of a supermarket in Nadi for similar breaches of food safety protocols.
