The FIJI Water Flying Fijians and head coach Mick Byrne are maintaining their focus despite distractions stemming from issues within the Fiji Rugby Union and former captain Waisea Nayacalevu. Ahead of their match against host team Japan for the Pacific Nations Cup title, Byrne emphasized that his players are committed to their performance.

Byrne stated, “We’re just focused on what we’re doing here. The boys are really focused. The energy around the room is enormous, and we’ve only got eyes for Saturday.”

A significant choice for the final is the decision to have Isaiah Armstrong start at fullback. Byrne pointed out Armstrong’s adaptability, noting the advantage he brings to the squad not only in the fullback position but also as a secondary playmaker.

“He enters the game well from fullback, but he also gives us a good opportunity to keep our territory game going. If we are playing with speed and we get across the gain line, he can step up from fullback and jump into that first receiver spot. I think he’s been going very well in that fullback position,” Byrne explained.

As the team prepares for the final, Byrne expressed satisfaction with the players’ physical and mental health. He reflected on their preparation following a strong semi-final performance against the USA, noting that the hot and humid conditions in Japan have felt familiar to the squad.

With confidence and a solid team spirit, the Flying Fijians are set to face Japan in what is expected to be an exhilarating Pacific Nations Cup final.
