Fiji’s Flying Fijians Soar to Victory with Olympic Star’s Brace

Olympic silver medalist Ponipate Loganimasi made an impressive debut for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, scoring two tries as the team triumphed over Japan with a score of 41-17 in the Pacific Nations Cup final held in Osaka last night.

Loganimasi entered the match in the second half, contributing to a strong overall performance by the Fijians, who faced a competitive first half and ended the period tied at 10-10.

Japan opened the scoring with a penalty from fullback Seungsin Lee in the 7th minute. Caleb Muntz quickly equalized for Fiji with a well-placed kick just a minute later. Japanese center Dylan Riley then surged forward to score a try, giving the hosts a 10-3 advantage after a successful conversion in the 19th minute.

Fiji tried to respond, and although inside center Inia Tabuavou appeared to score, the try was disallowed after a review. Winger Vuate Karawalevu eventually crossed the line in the 31st minute, with Muntz converting the try, bringing both teams even at halftime.

In the second half, Fiji took control, with Muntz scoring a penalty in the 54th minute to take a 13-10 lead. Loganimasi, newly introduced to play, dashed down the field to score in the corner shortly after. Albert Tuisue then powered through for Fiji’s third converted try in the 63rd minute, and Karawalevu added another to his tally with a well-executed setup from flanker Kitione Salawa.

Loganimasi capped off the scoring for Fiji with his second try, solidifying the victory, while Japan managed to earn a late consolation try for their efforts.
