After a thrilling 50-19 win against Tonga in the Pacific Nations Cup, Fiji’s captain Tevita Ikanivere and coach Mick Byrne reflected on the team’s performance and key moments that influenced the outcome of the match.
Ikanivere, who was awarded Man of the Match, emphasized the importance of mid-game conversations that shifted momentum in Fiji’s favor. “We talked about our discipline. We allowed Tonga to come back into the game towards the end of the first half. With a strong team like Tonga, if you give them an opportunity, they will capitalize on it. Our main focus was to sustain discipline and control, which we successfully achieved in the second half,” Ikanivere stated.
Coach Mick Byrne highlighted the team’s development, especially for players who are in their third year of professional rugby. He noted, “There is significant growth in this team. Many players are in their third year and are learning more about themselves. Today’s match served as another reminder that they need to keep their foot on the gas.”
