The head coach of the Flying Fijians, Mick Byrne, is confident in his team’s fitness ahead of their Pacific Nations Cup semi-final against the United States Eagles on Saturday at the Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. Upon arriving in Japan, Byrne noted that fitness has been a key strength during their Pacific Nations Cup campaign, allowing them to maintain pressure and play late into games.
Byrne emphasized the importance of solid defensive training this week, anticipating a more physical match. He highlighted the necessity for players to effectively engage in tackles and improve line speed, acknowledging that adapting to new laws in recent weeks may have led to some lapses.
He stated that the semi-final would require 80 minutes of disciplined rugby and consistent preparations, despite training in different countries. Possession retention and maintaining composure against the USA are also vital, with Byrne stressing the need to avoid risky offloads that could be exploited.
The coach expressed satisfaction with the team’s current morale and conditioning. He praised young players Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula for his strength in the territory battle and versatility, as well as Inia Tabuavou, who has adapted well to the inside centre position.
