Former rugby star Sireli Bobo is confident that the Flying Fijians are poised to disrupt Ireland’s rhythm in their upcoming test match on Sunday morning (Fiji time). In a recent discussion with SUNsports, Bobo praised the team’s resilience after recent performances, particularly noting their strong comeback following a setback against Scotland.
“We’ve seen the team deliver impressive wins against Wales and Spain,” said Bobo, who also co-coached Nadroga to a Skipper Cup victory this year. He emphasized the importance of mental preparation as they gear up to face Ireland.
Despite opening their Northern tour with a tough 57-17 loss to Scotland, Fiji rallied with a 24-19 victory over Wales and a decisive 33-19 win against Spain, which also featured a debut try from 18-year-old lock Setareki Turagacoke. Bobo believes that with the right mindset and readiness on game day, the Flying Fijians can claim victory.
Bobo regarded Ireland as a formidable opponent known for their structured and aggressive style of play, but he urged fans and players not to underestimate Fiji’s capabilities. The addition of Stade Francais winger Peniasi Dakuwaqa, who replaces the suspended Semi Radradra, adds to Fiji’s strengths. Dakuwaqa’s previous performance, where he scored two tries in his debut against Georgia, brings optimism to the squad.
Bobo expressed trust in head coach Mick Byrne’s ability to assemble the best team for the match. He added that Fiji has been developing strong options at the pivotal number 10 position, with Caleb Muntz and Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula showcasing talent to lead the charge.
Addressing Fiji’s historical record against Ireland, Bobo asserted that the circumstances can change, stating, “We have a good side. Now is our time to create history.”
Ireland’s scrum coach, John Fogarty, acknowledged the threats posed by the Flying Fijians, noting their significant improvement since the last encounter. He understands the challenges that lie ahead in facing a determined Fijian side.
The anticipation for this match is palpable, and fans are hopeful that the Flying Fijians can turn the tide and secure a monumental victory against Ireland. The match kicks off at 3:10 a.m. (Fiji time).
In summary, Bobo’s unwavering belief in the team’s potential, coupled with their recent performances, sets an optimistic tone as Fiji prepares to challenge Ireland, a formidable opponent. The upcoming match presents an exciting opportunity for the team to etch their names in rugby history.
