Former rugby star Sireli Bobo is optimistic about the Flying Fijians’ chances against Ireland in their upcoming Test match on Sunday morning (Fiji time). Speaking with SUNsports, Bobo praised the current team for their impressive performance in recent matches, particularly their ability to recover after an initial defeat to Scotland.
Bobo highlighted the Fijian team’s convincing victories over Wales and Spain, stating, “The boys defeated Wales and Spain convincingly.” He emphasizes the importance of being prepared mentally for the game against Ireland, noting that if the players are in the right mindset, they can achieve victory.
The Flying Fijians started their Northern tour with a tough loss to Scotland (57-17) but bounced back with a 24-19 win against a struggling Welsh team, followed by a 33-19 victory over Spain, where 18-year-old lock Setareki Turagacoke made a notable debut by scoring a try.
Bobo acknowledges the challenges posed by Ireland, describing them as an unpredictable and structured team. However, he remains confident, asserting that Fiji has the capability to win. “We have what it takes,” he stated.
In preparations for the match, the team has welcomed Stade Francais winger Peniasi Dakuwaqa, who steps in for the suspended Semi Radradra. Dakuwaqa previously impressed with two tries in his debut Test against Georgia.
Bobo expresses his trust in head coach Mick Byrne’s ability to select a strong lineup for the clash against Ireland, given his understanding of the players’ capabilities and combinations.
Despite Fiji’s past struggles against Ireland, Bobo believes this is the moment for the team to change that narrative. He highlighted the newfound depth in the fly-half position with options like Caleb Muntz and Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula, suggesting that victory is within reach. “We can make it happen. It is time to make another history,” he declared.
John Fogarty, Ireland’s scrum coach, echoed Bobo’s sentiments by acknowledging the Flying Fijians as a legitimate threat, noting their recent improvements since their last encounter.
As the match kicks off at 3:10 AM Fiji time, fans and supporters will be hoping to witness a historic performance from the Flying Fijians.
This article reflects the growing confidence and potential of the Fijian rugby team. The Flying Fijians are on an upward trajectory with young talents emerging and the team showing resilience and unity, which bodes well for their future in international rugby. Hope remains strong that they can turn past records into future victories.
