Fiji’s Flying Fijians Face Tough Semi-Final Challenge Amid Key Absences

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians will be without two key players as they prepare for their semi-final match against the USA in the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup this Saturday at Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

Loosehead prop Mesake Vocevoce is unable to participate due to a family bereavement, having lost his father, Netani Vocevoce, and is attending the funeral in Korovuto, Nadi. Team manager Bill Gadolo has confirmed that Vocevoce will return to the squad if Fiji progresses to the final.

Additionally, centre Andrea Cocagi will miss the next four matches due to a red card received in last week’s game against Tonga.

Despite these challenges, coach Mick Byrne remains confident in his team’s capabilities. He expressed his belief in the squad’s potential, stating, “I don’t know whether there’s a ceiling in this squad as they’re a very talented team.” His comments underscore the strength and depth of the team, despite the setbacks.

Fiji is set to take on the USA at 10:05 PM. In the other semi-final, Japan, who topped Pool B, will face Samoa on September 15 at 6:05 PM, also at Chichibu Memorial Stadium. Having led Pool A, Fiji aims to defeat the USA, which finished as Pool B runners-up, to secure a place in the final. The Flying Fijians are the reigning champions of the PNC tournament.
