Fiji’s Flying Fijian captain Tevita Ikanivere is preparing for a challenging match against Tonga in the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup in Nukua’lofa tomorrow. Ikanivere has been named to lead the 23-man squad as they face off against the hosts.
“Playing Tonga on their home ground with the support of their passionate fans is something we are anticipating. We view this match as an opportunity for growth,” Ikanivere mentioned prior to the team’s departure on Tuesday.
Following a convincing win over Samoa last month, where Fiji triumphed 42-16 in their opening PNC match, Ikanivere expressed the team’s focus on addressing their past mistakes. Samoa, having recently defeated Tonga 42-17 in Apia, adds to the context of the competitive atmosphere expected in the upcoming match.
“We expect a similarly physical encounter as we had against Samoa. Our key will be to maintain consistency in our physical approach and work ethic from the outset. Avoiding penalties will be crucial in keeping our momentum,” he noted.
Fiji and Tonga, historic rivals on the rugby field, have faced each other since their first Test in 1924, with this match marking the 95th meeting between the two nations.
In terms of the lineup, Adrea Cocagi returns as inside center for the Flying Fijians. New Fijian Drua recruit Vuate Karawalevu will join Epeli Momo on the wings, while Isaiah Ravula will start at fullback. Albert Tuisue is stepping into the Number 8 position, which pushes Kitione Salawa to the bench. Tuisue will join Ratu Meli Derenalagi and Elia Canakaivata in the back row.
The front row consists of Eroni Mawi, Ikanivere, and Samuela Tawake, with Mesake Vocevoce and Temo Mayanavanua anchoring the second row. Frank Lomani will take on the scrum-half role partnering with fly-half Caleb Muntz, and Iosefo Masi will play as outside center.
Kickoff for the match is set for 3 PM.
