The Fiji Water Flying Fijians are making significant strides in their preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with head coach Mick Byrne targeting the announcement of at least 80% of the squad by January next year. Currently, Byrne is in Europe evaluating Fijian players at their clubs to ensure an early and informed selection process.

In a recent Zoom interview, Byrne described 2025 as a transition year for the national side, emphasizing that players’ performance in their leagues, including those in France’s ProD2, would be a critical factor in squad selection. The Flying Fijians are scheduled to play nine test matches this year, starting with a fixture against the Wallabies on July 6, followed by a welcoming match against Scotland in Suva on July 12.

Byrne mentioned his eagerness to also identify young talents who could emerge as “bolters”—unexpected standout players making their mark ahead of the World Cup. He confirmed that all Europe-based players would be available for selection during the international window in July.

A point of interest is the potential inclusion of three former All Blacks: Hoskins Sotutu, Pita Gus-Sowakula, and George Bower, who have eligibility options opening up due to recent changes in international rugby eligibility rules. Byrne has acknowledged that the players’ respective contracts with New Zealand rugby complicate their availability for Fiji, especially since many contracts restrict players from representing countries other than the All Blacks. However, players like Sowakula, currently in France’s Top 14, could become an integral part of the squad if their current form warrants selection.

This adaptability reflects a broader trend in rugby as athletes increasingly look for opportunities to represent their heritage and engage in international competitions, aligning with Byrne’s inclusive strategy of scouting talent from various leagues beyond the traditional powerhouses.

As the team gears up for the upcoming international matches, fans can anticipate a dynamic mix of experience and youth, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive future for Fijian rugby on the global stage. The proactive approach in squad selection and development signifies a hopeful outlook as the Flying Fijians work diligently to elevate their performance ahead of the World Cup.
