Fiji’s Flying Fijians Explore Team Dynamics Ahead of PNC Clash

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is experimenting with various combinations within his 28-member squad as they compete in the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC). In an interview, Byrne mentioned that the interactions between the forwards and backs are consistently improving.

He noted the compactness of the squad, stating, “A squad of 28 isn’t very large.” With a few extra backs available, the team has the opportunity to explore different pairings without exhausting their options.

Byrne acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the final combinations as the tournament progresses but expressed confidence in the players getting the chance to play, emphasizing that no one is sidelined without participation.

Looking ahead to the upcoming challenge against Tonga, Byrne expressed his awareness of the intense atmosphere that comes with facing local teams in the Pacific Islands. “The fans are extremely passionate about their home teams,” he said, recognizing the added pressure it brings.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining focus on their objectives during the match, stating that outside distractions should not deter them from their goals.

In related news, burly prop Ben Tameifuna will lead Tonga as they face Samoa in their PNC opener in Apia, marking a crucial match for both sides.

This weekend’s schedule features Samoa against Tonga today at 4pm, and the USA facing Canada on Sunday at 1pm. Recently, Fiji triumphed over Samoa with a score of 42-16, while Canada lost to Japan, 55-28.
